Mitch Ditkoff’s “14 Ways to get Breakthrough ideas,” graphically depicts 14 different techniques that are commonly used by people trying to get breakthrough ideas and how we can innovate new ideas. Ditkoff has some really good points. I found his thoughts to be very interesting. Here are some of the examples that I thought were the most useful.
1. FOLLOW YOUR FASCINATION
This aspect of getting new breakthroughs to me seems very important for so many reasons. Most of us are probably going to get a job where you have to do the same thing almost every day that you work there. If you don’t like that job that you are at, then you will get tired of it real fast. The same can be said about getting a breakthrough idea. If you don’t do what fascinates you then you will probably be bored and will have a hard time thinking about new ideas. You should do what grabs your attention the most and just go with that because you will more likely to be able to think of new ideas from something that fascinates you then something that you hate.
2. FANTASIZE
Growing up in school, you are often taught to not fantasize or daydream. Even at work you are taught not to do it but in reality, it can help you come up with some of the most imaginative ideas. Through fantasizing, you are often thinking outside the box which is a key thing fro breakthrough ideas. It is however, reasonable that your teachers and bosses do not want you to fantasize or daydream at school or at work because they want you to focus on what they tell you to do. The problem with doing what they tell you to do is that it does not allow you to think outside the box because you are not thinking for yourself.
3. LOOK FOR HAPPY ACCIDENTS
Looking for happy accidents is another great way to get a breakthrough idea. Sometimes a great idea will hit you without any warning. I can’t tell you how many music artist that I have heard, had got an idea in the middle of the night or even at the airport. The problem with this aspect though, is that you can’t plan for it. It can really hit you when you least expect it to and if you don’t have a paper and pencil to write that idea down then you are forced to remember it until you get home. This can also happen for no particular reason and yet I know many people that are glad they do.
What trends in the marketplace most intrigues you? In what ways might these trends shift in the coming years -- and how might your most inspired idea be in sync with this imagined shift?
A trend in the marketplace that has intrigued me lately is the population change in the state of Ohio. I only heard about this almost one or two years ago but the population in Ohio has been steadily decreasing lately and for many reasons. Cleveland, Cincinnati, Toledo, Youngstown, Dayton, and Akron all suffered huge population declines from 2000 to 2010. Unlike cities in other states, Ohio's cities are gaining few Hispanic residents, Brookings Institution demographer William Frey says.
The only exception to the declining fortunes of Ohio cities was Columbus. The state capital and home of Ohio State University grew 11% in the decade and is twice as big as Cleveland. With jobs disappearing in Ohio, the population is predicted to continue to decrease which means we will lose political power during election days. Through my imagination, I would legalize things like gambling. Legalizing gambling would create jobs and stimulate the economy. I would also try to create programs like FDR did with his New Plan during the depression.
What is the topic of your next group brainstorm? Who will you invite? Who will facilitate? When?
The next group brainstorm topic would be the one I am doing for my MDIA 203 class where we are to create an animated video. The person that I want to work with next would be someone that has worked with animated video before. The person that will help facilitate would be my partner because I do not have much experience with Pro Cut. Hopefully my partner will help me out with learning it. I am planning to do this probably next weekend or even a few days before that.
What failed experiment or unexpected outcome might be interesting for you to reconsider?
A failed experiment that might be interesting for me to reconsider would be photography. A few years ago I used to be really into it but I just lost my thoughts of what to take photos of next. Now that I have grown and learned more about how to be creative, I could easily pick it up again with ease.
